Society puts a lot of pressure on people to fit in. People have a lot of pressure to be perfect not only in their appearance, but also in their conduct and in the way they do things. They may focus on mistakes or poor decisions that an individual has made in the past. Negative people bring negativity and should be avoided like the plague. Anyone who wants to be happy should surround themselves with happy, positive people who will help them build up their own self-esteem. Do Not Compare Your Achievements with Others One of the things that makes life so enjoyable is that there are no two people who are exactly the same. Different people have different talent, they have different aspirations, and they have different drive. When people compare themselves with others, what they are doing is taking the worst aspects of their own personality and comparing those with the best aspects or the best characteristics they see with others. Constantly comparing yourself to another person is the best way to ruin your self-esteem. It is better to compare your present achievement with past goals. This means that if your goal is to run a marathon, set benchmarks for yourself. And then as your endurance increases, you will be able to look back on your own progress and feel happy about what you have done. Take the Initiative There are certain things that cause a person to have low self-esteem that are really within their power to change. For example, a woman may have been in tip top shape as an adolescent and in her early 20's. However, after getting married, having a few children, and dealing with the challenges associated with secular work and caring for a family, she may have slowly watched as the figure she loved disappeared. This can be a cause for low self-esteem. However, there is something that can be done about it.
