Recently more research funded by the National Institute of Health has looked specifically at the unique nutrition needs of women throughout their lifetime. While choosing healthy foods and regular exercise are essential to long term health for both women and men, there are a few key nutrients that researchers have highlighted in a recent report on women’s health. Calcium and Vitamin D for strong bones, found in dairy protein sources such as whey protein, are the cornerstone of strong bones for women of all ages. Early on in life for young girls through to their late twenties according to the research is the key time for “building the bone bank.” The research and experts recommend approximately 1,300 mg of calcium per day along with some Vitamin D to help with absorption of the calcium. Many foods such as low fat dairy, whey protein, and even vegetables are naturally high in Calcium and Vitamin D. Folic acid, first highlighted for women’s health because during pregnancy it protects the baby from neural tube defects during development has become an extremely important nutrient for women of childbearing age. Found in leafy green vegetables and known amongst many researchers to help with hair growth along with its ability to prevent spina bifida and anencephaly in the developing children of pregnant mothers. A second B vitamin, B12, found primarily in animal protein and dairy products such as whey protein are essential for a healthy nervous system, sustained energy levels and proper growth of young children still breastfeeding. Protein is essential for both men and women, but as women age their needs for high quality protein remain essential for health and well-being. Maintaining strong muscles as women age is determined by how physically active they are and how much high quality protein they consume according to new research from the Mayo Clinic and the University of Texas Southwestern. According to the research whey protein is extremely high in certain nutrients that assist in building and maintaining strong lean muscles, something that many women lose as they age. Overall the research on nutrition for women is gaining in momentum with several key nutrients highlighted as important throughout the lifetime of women and especially important for women as they age, such as high quality protein. Consuming these nutrients along with regular physical activity, according to the research funded by the National Institute of Health build the cornerstone of a female specific healthy lifestyle.
