It can sometimes seem difficult to even think about entering into the world of website development. Yet you shouldn't let the world alone discourage you from trying to pursue and endeavors that you feel like you can profit from. The tips in this article can help you understand some of the key aspects of website creation. Avoid using so-called "mystery meat navigation". This involves using unlabeled images or other elements for the site's navigation. In many cases, the visitor has to mouse over the buttons to even see what they do. Navigation is best kept simple. Use text links across the top or along the left side of the page. Avoid using frames. Most sites have abandoned frames on their own as better alternatives have become available, but there are still sites out there that are trapped in 1996. Alternatives to navigational frames include fixed-position navigation panels, having navigation in multiple areas (e.g. left and bottom) or simplifying page structure so that navigational links are never far away. Smaller pages are better. Users with slower Internet connections might decide that the wait isn't worth it if your site loads slowly. You don't need visitors having pages get stuck every time they load because they may just leave your site and not return. Newsletters can generate repeat visits. This can be an excellent way of building your client base. Put a form for registration on a sidebar or somewhere visible, yet not interfering with the page's purpose. Your newsletter should only go out to those who specifically request to receive it, or you run the risk of turning off your customers. A search function should always be included when you develop a site that is very large. On your homepage in the corner to the upper right-hand, you can add a search box which lets users search for a term on your site. If you need a search function, FreeFind and Google offer their services for your site. If you want more visitors to your site, you need to design it in a way that makes it easy to update content. If your site can be easily updated it helps you to be able to quickly add new and relevant information. A site that is constantly updated will keep your visitors coming back for more. Every page of your website should have a way to return to the main page, or "home." This ensures that when users navigate deeper into your site, they always have a way to start over if they lose place of what got them to the page they are on currently. It is imperative that all of your webpages have titles. Forgetting to include titles while designing your website can have disastrous consequences. The biggest reason is that it makes your website look unprofessional when there is no title, both on the webpage itself, and also on a search results page. Search engines also place heavy emphasis on titles when determining the content of your website. Remember to utilize keywords, and make your titles descriptive. Don't load rich content automatically. Rich content mainly refers to music and videos, but anything other than text or graphics qualifies. Many people browse in work environments where sounds suddenly playing is a big problem. Also, many people find such rich content annoying in general. Rich content should require some interaction from the user before playing. When you are designing a page with links, make sure that the link has text content. Your visitors should know exactly what they're heading for when they click on a link. It is very easy for visitors to your page to accidentally hit a link if it has no text content. Forums are going to be your best friend in the next few weeks, this is because there's a lot of information to be gained from various forums where you have the ability to gain endless amounts of knowledge from people all over the world. So check out what websites and forums can help you along your way with website development. Make sure that you periodically go back and try to remember all that you've learned thus far. One of the biggest problems people have when they first start out with web page design is that they learn one or two things and forget them a couple of days later, which can hurt their website progress. You need to get familiar with HTML 5. If you don't already know about html5, then you need to brush up and get acquainted with it. Allow "site searching" on all of your pages. This is absolutely essential for maximizing the site's usability, and creates easy access to whatever information the viewer is seeking. Site searches are fairly easy to implement, and the reward will far outweigh any time or effort spent. Do not try to force your users to a place on your website they are viewing or interrupt their website experience. Don't push surveys in their face that they have to continue to keep using your site. If you remove your visitor's choice to force what you want on them, you are more likely to lose them completely and get a bad review. The use of captchas can be beneficial, and they should be utilized for certain tasks such as user registration. However, you should limit their use in general, and avoid them whenever possible. Encountering a captcha pulls a website visitor out of passive viewing, and forces them to solve a relatively complicated problem to continue. Unless visitors are already addicted to your site, they will probably leave your site in search of simpler pastures. Test the functionality of your website. It is important to do this for each step. When adding new features, have a few people test it to make sure it functions like you want it to. To you, a slow-loading video might not be a big deal, but a separate opinion might say otherwise. It is important to always get the advice of others. Use your artistic skills to design websites. By that, we mean you should be open to inspiration all the time. If you have an epiphany while you're out and about, write it down on any scrap of paper you can find. Even if you have to call yourself and give a reminder about an idea, do so. So now that you have a better idea of what to do when it comes to website development you should start to feel a little more confident in the subject. Website development is just like anything else, the more you learn the easier and less overwhelming the subject seems to become. Apply all that you learned today and success should follow.
