Ringing or buzzing in the ears can be very annoying. The disturbing noise occurs every once in a while for some people while others need to endure the ringing noise every waking hour of their lives. The ringing, buzzing and swishing that seems to come from inside the ears is known as tinnitus. This is not really a serious condition however, it can be caused by much more serious health problems.
There are a lot of factors that can cause the ringing sound and treatment for tinnitus is based on the cause of the said condition.
Tinnitus: An overview
Before we proceed on the different kinds of treatment for tinnitus, it is important for you to first understand and know the symptoms of tinnitus.
Tinnitus can range from mild to a much more serious case. Suffering from it can be very disturbing and while some people can endure the distracting noise only they can hear, some may be required to have it checked to undergo medical and even surgical treatment.
There are several factors that can lead to tinnitus:
Being exposed to excessively loud noises
Meniere's Disease or other ear infection can also cause the ringing sensation since it can trigger ear fluid pressure
Narrowing arteries or Atherosclerotic Carotid Artery Disease which is caused by too much cholesterol build up. With your arteries blocked, the flow of your blood becomes abnormal therefore, blood flow towards the head and neck region becomes unstable.
Treatment for tinnitus
People who are suffering from tinnitus need not worry since there are now medications and other holistic approaches that can mask the ringing sound. Although no cure to permanently get rid of the buzzing sound has been discovered yet, masking the sound is much better than enduring it.
With today's modern medicines, doctors commonly prescribe their patients to take anti depressants, anti convulsants and muscle relaxant for their tinnitus. The improving technology made it possible for the use of digital music players in generating relaxing sounds, which they have the patients listen to. This method is most commonly known as neuromicstinnitus treatment. Research has been done which shows that there are certain sounds that when listened to on a lower level, can greatly relieve the ringing noise brought about by tinnitus.
Another treatment for tinnitus that has been gaining popularity in the past few months is the use of transcranial magnetic simulation or TMS. The method is done in the hopes of inhibiting the excessive neural activity to lessen or permanently eliminate the internal ringing noise.
As mentioned before, treatment for tinnitus depends on the cause and before any suggestion is made by your doctor, you need to undergo various tests to determine the reason for tinnitus. Knowing whether it is caused by cochlear damage, noise, allergies, stress or other ear infections, or if it is caused by much more serious health problems such as brain tumors, thyroid disorder or hypertension, can help in determining the right treatment for you.
