A satisfactory sexual life can make a couple's relationship exciting and long lasting. Expressions of intimacy through the sexual act is something that most couples look forward to. When a couple's sex life is suffering, their relationship is affected and can make other negative emotions such as anger, bitterness and jealousy surface. Unfortunately, there are some couples who do not have the skills nor the patience to discuss sexual problems.
Sexual dysfunctions can cause the couple to drift apart unless they take the time to address the problem. If it is the man who is suffering from a sexual dysfunction, it also affects his level of self esteem and confidence as most men consider sexual longevity as an indicator of their maleness.
The most common sexual dysfunction among males is premature ejaculation. This condition is defined as the early release of sperm, right after or even before sexual penetration, that does not allow the man's partner to achieve orgasm. Most causes attributed to this condition are psychological in nature - such as stress caused by work or money concerns, performance anxiety, fear or even guilt.
Recently, scientists are trying to validate a biochemical cause, after studies prove that serotonin level has something to do with a man's ejaculation. Serotonin is the chemical in the brain that triggers feelings of happiness. A class of drugs called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors or SSRIs have been found quite effective in fighting depression by increasing the serotonin levels in the brain. These drugs are recently being used to treat patients with premature ejaculation who were also found to have lowered serotonin levels.
For men who would prefer remedies other than taking medications, here are some possible ways to cure premature ejaculation
1. During the sex act, concentrate on satisfying your partner more by going through a period of foreplay where you focus on sensations that you and your partner are experiencing. If your partner can already achieve orgasm before you do, then even if you come too soon or shortly after penetration, she will not feel deprived and you will have less pressure to delay ejaculation.
2. Learn to control your level of arousal to delay getting to the "point of no return". You can do this by trying to calm your breathing, so that you will not reach the point of inevitability before you are ready to ejaculate.
3. Practice control during masturbation. Bring yourself to the point just before ejaculation and then stop the stimulation until you lose your erection, then start all over again. By doing this regularly, you are practicing control over your ejaculatory reflex which reacts to the amount of stimulation you receive.
If the problem becomes too frequent that it affects your relationship too much, consider talking to a medical specialist or a psychologist who can help you (and your partner) understand the condition better.
