Why is it that we so often find that there just isn’t enough time for what is most important?
Is there really not enough time or are we simply not choosing to create space for those ‘important’ things?
For years, I have been trying to find the time to begin a regular meditation and yoga practice. However, with all of my other responsibilities and interests, I still have not found the time.
My intentions to wake up early and enjoy the peaceful opening of each day seem to be short-lived. Sleep soon becomes all too precious or the cold weather makes bed feel much too comfortable to get up any time before I absolutely have to. Couldn’t the days be just a little bit longer?
Last night, as I tucked my boys in to bed, as I have for 10 years now, the youngest insisted that I remain in the room until he was asleep. Normally, when this request comes, I focus on creating some kind of alternative such as reading in my own room. However, this evening, I decided to go with the flow and perched myself between their beds in meditation. I sat there for about half and hour as the boys drifted off to sleep with their father sitting beside them in bliss.
Why had I not done this before? 10 years had gone by without seeing this peaceful and open time in my busyness to be still, while supporting my kids’ needs at the same time.
As I listened to the peaceful purr of contented gentle snores, I felt grateful for this precious time and experience. It got me thinking about the many days that pass by without a plan to live what is most important. This habit of continuous lethargy is the perfect formula for a deep sense of discontent. I am responsible for my life. I want to look back one day and feel that I lived what was most important all along.
Today is a gift. What did you not do yesterday that you will do today? Who were you not yesterday that you will be today?
Think big. Live life to the fullest!
