What is Fistula?

A fistula is a tunnel with one opening inside the lining of your anus and another opening at the end of the bowel. It can develop anywhere between an intestine and the skin, between the vagina and the rectum, and other places but the most common place for fistula is around the anus. The main formation of fistula is infected anal glands. Due to this infected gland, an abscess cavity is formed. In some cases, abscess drains out by itself and others require medical consultation; otherwise, the problem of fistula may increase leading to worse conditions.

The most common symptoms of Fistula are as follows:

Pain, swelling or redness around the area of anal.

Discharge of pus or blood

Fever and chills

Pain during the bowel movements

Abdominal Pain

What are the causes of Fistula?

One of the main causes of anal fistula is an anorectal abscess which is formed due to the infection of anal glands.

Crohn’s disease may cause pus near the anus.

Due to the complication of previous surgery in the anorectal region

What are the treatment options for Anal Fistula?

The conventional treatment methods for fistula are fistulectomy and ksharsutra. The advanced techniques used now a day for fistula treatment are FiLaC (Fistula tract-Laser closure) and DLPL (Distal Ligation Proximal Laser). Other techniques have their own rate of recurrence of fistula but DLPL has zero recurrence rates. DLPL: In this procedure, any abscess cavity along with the internal opening is first excised and then is followed by closure of the distal tract. The proximal part of the fistula tract is then sealed with the Leonardo Laser. A fiber of the laser is used for complete closure of the tract.
