When talking about things one should not be addicted to, we need to weigh the effects of such things first, but before that, we need first to understand the word addiction and what it means. Addiction itself is a condition that results from the continuous use of a substance or engagement in an activity which at first is satisfying and pleasurable but later becomes compulsive and out of control of the person involved in it. This uncontrollable indulgence, in turn, interferes with one’s normal life and obligations such as work and interaction with loved ones. There are also diverse forms of addictions, but this write-up will be focusing on just a few major ones that people might not see as serious big deal.

Here are five things you should try as much as possible not have an addiction:

ANGER

Anger is the expression of a strong feeling of annoyance, displeasure or unfriendliness. Sometimes, anger can be productive if it is addressed swiftly and expressed healthily. In fact, anger helps some people to think and act without being prejudicial. However, when it becomes an addiction, it causes a lot of damage to the body and might lead to deterioration of one’s health. Anger subjects its addict to a risk of stroke, weakness in the immune system, hostility towards everyone, depression, all which can result in an untimely death.

ALCOHOLISM

Alcoholism is the most detrimental form of alcohol abuse with the inability to control drinking habits. An addiction to alcoholism is not a day’s journey. It is a systematic and progressive adventure. It starts right from the very first sip of alcohol and subsequently the quest and urge to get more increases. One should be careful of the pleasure of being tipsy and the sense of belonging derived at the moment, especially when drinking with friends. However, the ingestion of alcohol in the right amount for a good reason has been found to have several health benefits that include the reduction in the rate of heart disease and minimizing the risk of diabetes. But, despite the health benefits one can derive from the intake of alcohol, having it as an addiction makes you a carrier of the disease called “alcoholism.” This disease subjects you to severe medical conditions such as the inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis), nerve damage, liver damage and weakening of the immune system, thereby making your body prone to other diseases. And furthermore, when drunk, you are sure of losing the consciousness to accurately control yourself, thus taking a particular action that can result in serious regrets for you.

PORNOGRAPHY

The use of pornography is controversial. One cannot say it is wrong or right. Some men are said to be unable to have an erection except they watch other people in the act of having sex. In this case, pornography is helpful, but when it becomes an addiction, it leads to the emotional emptiness and dissatisfaction. A porn addict is shut out of the real world of intimacy. He binds more with the fictional and unrealistic world of intimacy in his head. Because the ecstasy and pleasures in pornography are overrated, individuals involved in porn addiction always think their partners are not good enough for them. They are mostly unsatisfied because they expect too much. Pornography is used by many to dodge the feelings of low self-esteem, depression, and loneliness, meanwhile, the escape is often a temporary one as the feelings they (porn addicts) tried to run away from returns stronger than it was.

PROCRASTINATION

Procrastination can be referred to as a situation or a process of putting aside tasks that require urgent attention with the hope of doing it at a later time and in a better way. Procrastination as simple as it sounds could be a big deal when it becomes an addiction; meaning it has turned into a continuous and regular process by an individual. When you Procrastinate, it gives you the feeling that you are saving time or that you are perfectly prioritizing your ‘to do’ task, but in the real sense, it is just like a mole of pain piled up to make a mountain of agony afterward. Your memory goes through an extra drill when dealing with the consequences of procrastination. A situation where you had more than enough time to get something done excellently, but due to an unreasonable reason, you decided to defer it till you now have limited time to carry out a perfect job. And as a result of that, frustration of getting the task done correctly within the limited period sets in and might affect one mentally.

Lying

Sometimes, we lie to protect our loved ones, attain certain positions, please other people, and mostly to stay alive. We tell lies to avoid death, danger or consequences of our evil deeds. A lot of individuals tend to delay a moment of truth about an issue of their lives until the day they draw their last breath. It is important to know that secrets are different from lies. More often than not, lying is considered as playing smart (cleverness), and an escape route from troubles and dangers but once it becomes an addiction, it creates an atmosphere of doom for an individual. The more lies you involve yourself in, the more you need a bigger lie to cover up. It becomes a chain cycle. You have to keep lying to have a sense of belonging or to keep certain status. Lies take you far away from reality. Being real and transparent becomes an impossible and a painful task. Once you are busted, you become an unwanted entity to the friends and folks you have lied to in the past. No one wants to associate with an individual without integrity; a person who tells you something and does otherwise. An addiction to lying would always leave the addict detected, rejected, broken and isolated. All these in turns affect your well-being as an individual.
