One of the main reasons why people get oral implants is due to tooth loss because of gingivitis, accidents, and tooth decay. Once the dental implants are placed, people can now smile, eat, and speak normally without having to shy away from other people. But even if you now have a set of “brand new teeth”, you must not forget about cleaning them. Dental implants require just as much care and cleaning as regular teeth.

Some of the things which should be done once the oral implants recovery period is over are:

1. Regular visits to the dentist. One of the reasons why people have poor dental health is because they seldom, or in some cases, never make visits to the dentist. The dentist is the only person who can properly assess the health condition of your teeth and is also the best person to clean them for you. It us recommended that people visit the dentist at least twice a year, but for those who have oral implants, it is recommended to visit the dentist every 6 months to have thorough cleaning and removal of plaque. The dentist is also the best person to check your gums and jaw after the recovery period.

2. Cleaning twice a day. Oral implants should be brushed and flossed at least twice a day to keep them clean. To get that perfect smile, implants should be flossed using a special floss or gauze, and should also be thoroughly brushed every day.

3. Brush teeth thoroughly. Like regular teeth, dental implants require just as much cleaning. It is important to get a good toothbrush, especially the ones that can clean the back of your teeth and in between the teeth. There are also patients who have removable dental implants; they should be brushed thoroughly with a soft bristle brush.

4. Use mouthwash. Using mouthwash is extremely important to avoid postoperative infections which are quite common for people with oral implants who have poor hygiene. Chlorhexidine Gluconate is the best mouthwash to use for patients with dental implants and should be used one month after the recovery period. The mouthwash is ideal to remove and reduce growth of bacteria.

5. Avoid things that stain the teeth. To keep the implants white and clean, it is best to avoid food or things that stain the teeth. Coffee and tea are one of the top teeth strainers; smoking is also bad for your teeth. If you cannot avoid these things, the teeth have to be brushed regularly, especially after smoking or drinking tea or coffee to avoid the dreaded teeth stain. It is also important to ask your dentist if certain teeth whitening products can be used to whiten oral implants.

Oral implants bring back confidence and bring back smiles to people; along with this they also need to be cleaned and cared of so that they keep their shine and luster. Proper care and cleaning will not only retain the cleanliness of the teeth implants, but they also make the implants last longer and stronger.
