The world is shrinking. Well, sort of. More and more people are traveling these days. One person can go to one country in one day and then hop on to another country the next day. Airfares have gone lower, thanks to websites such as Expedia.com. Even hotel rates are affordable these days. If you want to pay even lower rates, there are backpacker rooms now available in different countries all over the world. The best thing is, they cost for just a fraction of your usual three- or five-star hotel. Here are five safety tips when you are traveling anywhere in the world. 1. Research the places you are going to. Just browse the World Wide Web and you’ll see thousands of reviews and tips written by people who have already gone to the places you will visit. List down the sites and tourist spots you want to visit, the right etiquette in buying souvenirs, the places you should avoid, and any precautions you need to take. Knowing the place you want to visit will also prepare your mind for what to expect. If you fail to research the places you’ll visit, you might end up spending more than your budget, or you may find yourself in compromising situations. 2. Travel light. Don’t bring your whole closet with you. If you did your research well, you will know the kind of weather in the places you’ll visit, as well as the clothes that would be socially acceptable. Keep in mind that in the places you will visit, there will be laundry shops just in case you run out of clean clothes to wear. If all else fails, you can go shopping for additional clothes you will need to wear. The benefits of traveling light are clear. For one, you don’t need to bring with you a trolley bag. It will speed up your time at the security check at the airport, you won’t have to pay excess baggage fees, and you can accommodate surprise trips in the places you will visit. Sweet, huh?! 3. Get a travel insurance. Although you may be a careful traveler and you avoid going to unsavory places, you should still get travel insurance. Some credit cards do offer free travel insurance if you purchase your air ticket with them. Make sure that you have a copy of the policy, and that you know where to call in cases of emergency. 4. Pack your camera with you. You don’t need a fancy DSLR with you. You can just grab a point and shoot camera. It’s easier to grab and take pictures with, and you can easily stow it away when you don’t need it. The quality of the picture, however, won’t be as good as that taken with a DSLR. But you can take more pictures this way. 5. Enjoy! This is the most important tip of all. One of the reasons people travel is so that they could enjoy other places, enjoy time with family and loved ones. And of course, see the rest of the world. Bring a book with you. Pen and paper, or at the very least your tablet PC, or your smartphone. You may want to write about your travels and who knows, maybe a little poetry on the side. Don’t ever treat your trip as work. Chill out. Talk to people. See places. And enjoy yourself.
