The brain is a living organism and as such requires the right foods to keep it healthy. Certain foods are known to benefit the brain. Foods that are rich in anthocyanin for example have been proven to improve the memory- • Blueberriesrn• Red applesrn• Red Onionsrn• Black, purple or red grapesrn• Cherriesrn• Beets It's usually the red coloring in the fruits or vegetables which contains the important anthocyanin. Foods containing quercetin, a naturally occurring chemical in foods that is also proven to improve and protect memory, foods such as- • Onions - including white and yellowrn• Apples - all colorsrn• Red grapesrn• Red wine Folic acid is also very important for the health of the brain and memory; folic acid can be found in foods such as- • Whole grain cerealsrn• Broccolirn• Spinachrn• Beets Fresh fruits and vegetables are known for their positive effect on the brain and memory, and fish too is well known as an excellent brain food. Keeping the body healthy with plenty of fresh foods, rich in vitamins and minerals as well as trace elements is essential for proper body and mind function and health. Fiber plays an important role in the health of the brain, as well as the rest of the body, keeping the body free from the buildup of toxins, keeps the brain healthy and the memory active. A marked deterioration in memory in an elderly person can often be due to constipation, the toxins in the blood stream affecting brain function, the same is true of younger people too, although generally this isn't as notice able. Keeping the body as free from toxins as possible will aid in brain health and memory function. Foods rich in anti-oxidants i.e. vitamins A, C and E are also vital for healthy brain and memory function. Keeping the body healthy with the right foods, keeps the brain healthy, and just as with the body, the brain will suffer from the negative effects of excess alcohol, tobacco, non-prescription drugs and junk food. If you want to improve memory then eating the right foods and avoiding foods which have a negative effect on the body, is the quickest and easiest way of building good brain power and keeping the brain and memory functioning to its optimum. The correct foods, rest, and exercise both physical and mental are essential for the health of both body and mind.
