But today’s moms wanting to eat for eye health should know that eating for better vision is not just about carrots only. A poor diet can put your sight at risk. Awareness of the link between diet and good eye health is low among people. We eat foods that give us energy, prevent diseases, help us lose weight and make our bones and bodies strong. But do we eat the right foods for healthy eyes? Best vision and healthy eyes start with what you eat. However, specific foods that benefit the eyes are not widely known. There are a number of foods linked to eye health which also tastes great. Antioxidants Antioxidants are resources that help protect cells against damage from harmful free radicals which the body produces when it is exposed to harmful elements such as exposure to sun rays, smoke of the cigarette and air pollution. The protective qualities of antioxidants are valuable for every cell in the body, including those in the eyes. They are found in dark leafy green vegetables such as kale and spinach and also in citrus fruits and berries such as oranges, strawberries, grapefruit, blueberries and apples (with the peel). Fish Fish like tuna, salmon, mackerel and anchovy are the best essential fatty acids. Essential fatty acids are very worthful for your whole body and as well as for eyes because it helps the retinal function, visual development and possibly protecting against dry eye. Chia Seeds This is an extra boost of nutrients. Chia seeds contain more omega-3, more calcium than a glass of milk and more antioxidants than any other food. They are also a great way to get more fiber in your diet. Corn Yellow corn is great source of lutein and zeaxanthin. Make corn as a part of your meal to boost the absorption of the eye. B Vitamins Higher levels of B vitamins have also been linked to lower AMD risk. Vegetables and beans contains high source of vitamin B6, while B12 is abundant in fish and other animal products. Beef and Lamb Beef and lamb both (from grass-fed sources) provides a great source of zinc. Zinc helps in protecting the retina and lowers the risk for developing macular degeneration and cataracts. Using zinc can minimize your risk for retinal detachment. Beef and lamb is a source to selenium as well. Selenium helps in protecting the lens of the eye and prevents age-related cataracts. Selenium and zinc might also help protect from glaucoma, a condition associated with increased pressure within the eye, which can lead to optic nerve damage and blindness. Coffee Practicing a cup of coffee in the morning may help you get through the day without the itchy, burning, irritation of dry eye, a problem that occurs due to lack of tears. After consuming the caffeine, more tears are produced.
