Lionel Messi’s record-breaking skill should ensure there is a wie separation between him and everyone else in football’s on-field performance. But while Messi clearly outperforms his competition on the pitch phenomenally, they cannot top the world of international renown. Because no matter how many goals Messi scores, David Beckham still leads the way. Messi might be winning championships in the world, Beckham is still the most famous player in the world despite his age and playing in the soccer hinterlands of America. Beckham’s brand is the result of certain circumstances making him uniquely imitable. He has movie star looks and a personality that grabs the attention of even casual fans. His time with Manchester United and in Madrid made him recognizable as one of the best players of the generation, while his time in the States in Los Angeles giving him access to film stars and other members of the Hollywood elite. Even at the end of his career, his light shines the brightest for millions of fans around the world. So what is to become of it all when Beckham retires, something very likely to be occurring within the next few seasons? By all rights, Messi should take Beckham’s spot as the global star of the sport. Messi plays both on one of the premier rosters in Europe along with the Argentinian team, one of the game’s most renown international groups. Messi scores goals at a mighty rate and with beautiful grace, aspects that make him a regular presence on the field and in the game. At just 24, he’s hardly in the peak of his career. But will his abilities carry him to fame like they have for footballer Beckham? Beckham was the perfect storm of player and advertising gold, just like Messi is a often-sought competitor on the field today. Beckham was photogenic, rugged and didn’t shy away from marketing his own brand. Messi appears more interested in what happens at play; a noble facet for a footballer but won’t help establish himself as an international superstar. When it’s all said and done, Messi probably won’t be the worldwide icon that Beckham is. And maybe that’s not a bad thing. By focusing on the ball, Messi allows his followers to zoom in on the amazing things which he can do on the pitch instead of what brand he wears. For fans of the beautiful game, that’s the most critical element for a player.
