This was revealed by Dr. Lilibeth David of the Communicable Disease Control Service of the Department of Health in Manila.

“The second bite of the dengue-carrying mosquito usually causes dengue hemorrhagic shock syndrome which is fatal in children,” David said.

Dengue is a viral disease transmitted by two species of day-biting mosquitoes - the Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus. Only the female of the species bites. It needs blood to nourish its eggs which can be found in flower vases, pots, old tires, and other places where there is stagnant water.

“The rainy season is usually dengue season since there’s a lot of breeding places for mosquitoes,” David explained.

Although anyone can be affected, the usual victims of dengue are children below 9 years old who live in crowded places or frequent crowded areas like schools, parks, and malls.

Normally, dengue disappears on its own. There is no cure for the disease but patients are advised to rest in bed and drink plenty of fluids.

To prevent dengue, check your house and surroundings for possible breeding places of mosquitoes like canals, clogged roof gutters, and open containers. Use mosquito nets and screen doors and windows.

Spray insecticides and electric repellers may help indoors but they are useless outside. For maximum protection against dengue-carrying mosquitoes, use an insect repellent with deet that provides eight long hours of continuous protection wherever you go.
