In these uncertain times, with stock market yo-yoing and the US still trying to get out of its economic mess, investors are opting for ways - tangible ways - of making money. One viable option is to put money in physical assets like real estate. One good bet is investing in foreclosure homes.

The conditions are right now ripe for such business people since the depressed housing market may offer them great properties selling below market prices. Interest rates are also so low, allowing investors to take out loans to purchase such assets.

Homes that were taken back by lenders or by the government may not necessarily be located in unsafe neighborhoods since the list of foreclosure homes may also include upscale properties that a small investor may not be able to afford during economic boom. If done right, an investor may be able to resell this property for a handsome profit.

In addition, lenders that have repossessed these distressed homes are also eager to get rid of these from their portfolios. They may even offer buyers financial assistance to speed up the process.

Research, Compute, Legwork.

In order for a buyer to gain two-fold earnings from investing in foreclosure homes, he/she must devote time and a lot of effort, which can save him/her money. Research and number-crunching is mandatory since not all assets with a 30-percent off tag are cheap. In the end, the buyer may have to pay for some costly surcharges that came with the mortgage that went sour. Or the property may have been located in an inaccessible area or built in a marshland, which would render the asset undesirable for renters or primary home buyers.

Another thing that an investor must do is to inspect foreclosures that he/she is keen on. The buyer has to see whether he/she can carry the cost of repairs (or maintaining a 3,000-square feet house if he/she intends to rent these out) and not end up just break-even. Even worse is selling the property at a loss.

Perseverance, patience and tons of guts are needed when investing in foreclosure homes. But in the end, the rewards for the brave investor may not only be two-fold.
