Former Marine Charges Camp Lejeune over Benzene H2o Contamination (January 27, 2011) Former Marine Joel Shriberg filed a $16 million federal suit against Camp Lejeune, claiming that his breast cancer was triggered by benzene contaminated water on the base. The case was filed Friday in Onslow County with the federal court for the Eastern District of North Carolina. The claim was first filed with the Department of the Navy last April. However, the case was deemed denied after 6 months without a closing disposition. Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune is a 246-square-mile United States military training facility in North Carolina. Despite the fact that the federal government owned and controlled the base, it was given an authority to do what ever was needed to provide an uncontaminated normal water supply that was safe for drinking, bathing along with other purposes. Shriberg claimed that water contamination at Camp Lejeune has affected Marines and civilians alike. Reports said that the base’s h2o contains greater than seventy chemicals and toxins like benzene and trichloroethylene, which seeped into the water systems from cleansing tanks and weapons stores. Shriberg allegedly accused the base for intentionally pouring the toxic chemicals directly in to the ground or dumping drums of poisonous chemicals directly into nearby waterways. He stated that during a appropriate period, Camp Lejeune personnel continued to destroy each military and civilian households with its cancerous effects. Reports said that Shriberg’s suit seeks more than $200,000 in reimbursement for past medical expenses, $one million dollars to cover upcoming medical bills, including $4,748.25 for every calendar month to cover hormone treatment for the rest of his life, $five million dollars for previous ache and suffering, $six million dollars for up coming ache and suffering and $4 million for lowered life expectancy along with expenses, expenses and acceptable benzene attorney’s fees.
