Fortune Cookie Forecast

“It sucks right now!” Martha said with despair in her voice. “I just lost my job. My husband’s salary barely covers the necessary expenses. Our daughter needs money for a science project. Our son needs a cavity filled. I wrecked my car. The dog is sick. And my credit cards are at their limit.”
When life hits a barrier it feels like we will be stuck there forever. It’s hard to imagine that life will get any better. Yet is does and always will. The passage from the Bible “This, too, shall pass”, reminds us that it will get better. The state of our lives right now does not reflect what will happen in the future.
We can influence our future experience by feeling grateful for what we have right now. Instead on focusing on what is happening and how horrible it is, pay attention to what is wonderful in your life. Notice, appreciate and express gratitude.
It is not always easy. Doubt sneaks in especially after several interviews with no offers or the pesky calls from the creditors. We grasp at fortune cookie forecasts or other peoples’ misfortune to feel better. However, focusing on even the littlest of joys in our lives shifts the forecast of the future to our benefit.
Your circumstances right now do not reflect the beautiful future you desire. Put your attention on the health of your children, the taste of the peanut butter and jelly sandwich you are eating or the beauty of the sky. Feel the gratitude for these experiences in your life right now regardless of what is going on around you.
The message in your fortune cookie reads, “Today will pass. You can live this day in desperation or appreciation. One gives you misery the other wonder.”
