“Fr. Thomas Keating - The Man Who Brought Mediation to Christianity”
Thomas Keating was a Christian Trappist Monk who passed away in October 2018— he will be missed. From a very young age, he knew he wanted to be a monk and as soon as he graduated college at Yale he signed on with a Monastery and joined the Trappist Monks.
He was very active in bringing together all the faiths and wrote over 35 books including an intro to a great book called Kundalini Energy and Christian Spirituality: A Pathway to Growth and Healing, by Philip St Romain. He also wrote Active Meditations for Contemplative Prayer, and Centering Prayer (Centering prayer is his form of meditation): On Retreat with Father Thomas Keating.
After being introduced to meditation he was truly convinced that this was what the bible called contemplation. And then Thomas Keating went on to develop his own type of meditation which was called “Centering Prayer”.
One of his great quotes is “Silence is the language God speaks, and everything else a bad translation” showing how much he really believed that meditation was the core of healing and being close to God.
His centering prayers was based upon the 14th-century prayer called the “The Cloud of Unknowing” which he developed into a formal type of prayer and meditation.
There are lots of wonderful Youtube videos about his “Centering Prayer”. In fact, multiple videos showing people how to relax their mind and get closer to God.
Thomas Keating also said, “People are unhappy with authority these days, and I understand why. But they shouldn’t be unhappy with direct and intuitive practices of a direct relationship with God.”
And he believed we should learn to trust. Thomas Keating also said, “Focus on trust. When you trust that we are all part of something beautiful beyond our wildest imagination, you will find healing.”
Thomas Keating for sure had great trust… in fact, his final words where
“Til We Meet Again”.
I hope you will read his books, watch his videos, and dig a little deeper into all the great teaching of a man who believes in love.
Many Blessings to Everyone!
