Do you live in the past? How do you free yourself from the past?

There is no individual that hasn’t experienced pain or sadness as this is a normal thing in life. However, some stay living in the past for a long time. As life goes on, it becomes harder for them to overcome these negative feelings that they experienced and can end up in depression. When the individual keeps living in the past, he could be hurting his emotions, current relationships with others, lose focus, and become a procrastinator.

Some people wait for the new year to start making resolutions and new changes in their lives. What they don’t realize that every day is a new day and can be used for change. If you want to free yourself from the past, you shouldn’t wait for new year, you can start right now.

Holding on to the sadness and pain from the past is harmful since you will be focusing on the negative emotions, instead of focusing on the emotions of happiness. To overcome the sadness and depression that you acquired, you need to free yourself from the past and focus on the present time.

You might be saying I want to live free from the past and move on with you life, but don‘t know how. To learn how to become free from the past, follow the quick guide below:

1. Express your inner feelings

Talk to someone about the pain and sadness you feel. Expressing your emotions and venting helps to relax you. Don’t be shy to talk to someone about your pain and sadness. Talk and complain until you get everything out of your heart, so with time, you can move forward.

2. Decide to live in the present

“If you pay attention to the present, you can improve upon it. And, if you improve on the present what comes later will also be better.” -Paulo Coelho

Realize how living in the past is hurting you. Ask yourself, how it is affecting you? Is it affecting your relationship with others? Is it affecting your career? Is it affecting your health? If the answer is yes to these questions, then make a decision to free yourself from the past. Decide to take care of yourself first and you can do that by living in the present and by focusing on the positive qualities you have in your life.

3. You have a choice

You can’t control the actions of others, but you can control your thoughts and actions. You can commit to stop focusing on the bad experiences from the past and the pain you have. Choose to move forward and not backwards.

4. Know your responsibilities

Know that you were part of the event and situation and you could have done something to avoid what happened in the past. This doesn’t mean you are to blame, but you have to realize that you are not the victim, but you are a person who is a participant in life and its events like everyone else.

5. Forgiveness

Forgiveness will change your life for the better. However, forgiveness doesn’t mean that you have to forget what has happened completely. What you have to do is forgive, so you can overcome the pain, anger, and sadness you hold from the past.

6. Acceptance

Accept the past completely. The past helps you to learn from and gain experiences. Acceptance is the key to getting away from the past and moving on with your life. You are on the way to freedom if you accept what can’t be changed.
