A stigma means to place an unfair judgement on a person and is a practice strongly akin to gossip. There are innumerable ways to stigmatize people. For example, one might say of a male hairdresser, that he is a sissy for being employed at a lady's beauty shop, when he may be as full of vitality as most other men, among his peers. He can in fact be a strong man who simply saw barbering and hairdressing as his trade in life. We also must realize that someone has to do this, and we want such people to be highly adequate in taking care of our haircut and style needs!

For another example, a girl who enjoys playing predominantly male sports, may have the stigma placed on her of being a tomboy. She may in reality be as feminine as her female peers and simply enjoys the competitive nature of male sports. Many other examples could be cited for the unfair stigmata of people, including in the spiritual categories. People who are quiet in church are not necessarily unspiritual, just as people who may be somewhat energetic in church, necessarily seeking attention. Jesus said the following in regard to this aspect of judging people wrongly (sinfully). - - -

John 7:24: "Judge not according to the appearance but judge righteous judgment."

Strangely but true, is the fact that part of our human nature is to see through unfair, sinfully critical eyes. It seems to be something that is irresistible to the unredeemed especially (unregenerated spirits), meaning those who have not received salvation in Jesus Christ. This new birth in our Messiah, is what causes us to see through new eyes, having more compassion and care for others.

About the Author

I am a graduate of Liberty University (1996) for completion of theological studies (33 college credits) and I completed "Bible Survey" with Assemblies of God - Berean College. I consider myself a "Bapticostal" (a Baptist also having Pentecostal beliefs). Bible studies are one of my most-covered book subjects. I am however, careful to only address those subjects I believe God has given me correct revelation on. I was a Christian Youth Minister, beginning in 1983 for approximately 18 years. During, between and after youth ministries I served in other church capacities as well, including interim pastoring and retirement home ministry. MOST IMPOTANTLY, I am a redeemed man, who has received salvation by acceptance of Jesus Christ (John 3:16).
