Freelance a person who usually works for multiple companies at different times, who is independent and not on the permanent payroll of a company. Management consultants are very much needed in the current market scenario, many startups are being formed and freelance management consultants, helps these companies to grow. The steps that a freelance management consultant takes is slightly different to a person working in a firm, these are the steps involved while executing a project-  Understanding the scope of the project in the current market environment- Understanding market dynamics is very important, during times of recession or lower economic growth the project needs to be modified so that it doesn’t harm the company’s financial security.  Check and manage available Resources- Time and Budget are both resources a consultant must be aware of. For the project at hand a time frame needs to be made, so that the project can be executed correctly. A budget needs to be made, and followed strictly as money is one very important resource.  Make a team: Since the freelance management consultant doesn’t have a team in a firm, he or she needs to make a team, other freelancers need to be found and a core team needs to be formed, who plan and execute the project. The next stage is the most crucial, making the project plan, having a test run, modifying it and the actual execution of the project. The major steps here are-  Develop a plan: The plan of the project needs to be developed; an analysis must be done to see the strengths, weakness/limitation, opportunities and threats (SWOT).  Implement in a small scale and test: Make the plan and take a trial run with a sample, and see if it is effective. The plan would have to be modified if the results are not good enough. The budget must be followed and the timeline might need to be modified if the test run is taking longer than anticipated.  Make the final plan: The final plan needs to be made, after all the modifications have been in the previous stage. At this level, a checklist should be made so as to check all the details, so that while executing the project they wouldn’t be any issues. The previous step involved in identifying the issues, these issues must not happen during the execution stage.  Monitor progress, document and evaluate the plan: The plan is in action now, so the progress needs to be monitored. Documentation is a must as it helps while creating a similar project later in the future. Usually documentation is maintained so as to show the progress to the firm that has hired the freelance management consultant. Evaluate the plan, after the project is done the entire project needs to be evaluated through an in-depth research. This is the final leg of the project, the consultant’s project needs to be impressive and the project must be successful so that he/she can retain the firm as a client. Those were only the steps for the project; the freelance management consultant needs to know how to market themselves as a company to clients. This sort of a career move is usually advisable if a person has prior job in management consulting and has a name in the organization he or she is worked in. Usually clients build a good rapport with a consultant, so the individual would be known without being a part of a firm. As a consultant the price you charge should be lower than a company, start-ups prefer freelance management consultants who usually charge less than a full service organization. These are just a few things one must keep in mind while being a freelance management consultant.
