Cellulite is often described as orange peel or cottage cheese skin. The affected skin has dimples or bumps and usually appears on the thighs, buttocks and or upper arm area. Cellulite can be a problem for thin women as well as for heavier women. The reason is this: cellulite develops from fat deposits as well as toxins accumulating within the subcutaneous fat layer of the skin. In essence, this connective layer of skin is comprised of tubular configurations that hold fatty deposits. Fibrous bands create the walls of these ‘tubes’ or chambers which contain the fat, and these walls connect the skin to muscles under the tissue. Cellulite becomes visible when the connective tissue becomes less supple. This causes the cellulite (fatty deposits) to bulge out over the chambers and results in an orange peel appearance of the skin. Cellulite Causes and Risk Factors Now that you know what cellulite is, it’s time to learn what causes it and what some of the risk factors are. Weight gain can definitely be a factor of concern, but other issues include failure of the lymphatic system to eliminate toxins from the body and a lack of circulation to the affected area. Dietary toxins that cannot be broken down by the liver are stored in the fat cells under the skin. These toxins can cause fluid and fat retention in the cells. The cells swell up which reduces blood circulation and lymph can be prevented from draining properly. The reduced blood circulation combined with decreased lymph drainage results in a fat accumulation or a stretching of the connective tissue and the appearance of orange peel skin. One way to combat this is to eat a healthy diet. Drinking lots of water can help to flush out toxins from the body. Obviously everyone is at risk for developing visible cellulite, but some people are more likely to have to deal with this problem than others. The primary risk factor is gender. Because of the way fat is distributed in women’s bodies they are at an increased risk for cellulite. Genetics also play a role in the development of cellulite. The aging process results in a thinning of the skin as well as a loss of the skin’s elasticity and firmness. This makes cellulite more visible. Fighting Cellulite Most women begin their battle with cellulite using over-the-counter products. This usually includes anti-cellulite gels and creams. Within a short period of time it is discovered that these products have only a temporary effect on the cellulite. Creams and gels can moisturize the skin, which may “plump up” the skin’s surface, making the cellulite less noticeable for a period of time. Unfortunately, these products cannot penetrate deep enough into the skin to ‘repair’ the real problems. Therefore, the cellulite is not ‘repaired’ with these treatments. True solutions will need to address much more than just the outward appearance of cellulite. Cellulite happens at a deep level below the surface of the skin. With that being said, effective cellulite treatments will necessarily have to work “from the inside out.” Essentially they need to improve circulation, improve lymphatic drainage, and break down fat cells. Most of the products available, the common creams and gels, cannot penetrate the skin deeply enough to provide the effects needed. The reality is that most of these products do nothing more than moisturize the skin. The best way to get positive results when using a cellulite cream is to visit a quality skin clinic to make your purchase and use the product in conjunction with the proper cellulite treatment as recommended by a skin care expert. Professional products sold at skin clinics work below the surface of the skin. They are specially formulated to improve circulation, hydration and to even break down fat. Magnetic Pulsing and Radio Frequency Cellulite Treatment One of the most innovative and most effective cellulite treatments uses both magnetic pulsing and radio frequency to penetrate the skin to increase circulation, stimulate the formation of new blood vessels, help break down fat and improve lymphatic drainage. This treatment actually addresses all the issues and concerns related to cellulite, including increasing the synthesis of collagen and elastin, and it effectively works to make the skin firmer. This is revolutionary technology as the treatment penetrates deeply into the affected area to treat the cellulite from the inside out. These cellulite reduction treatments are affordable, and they require no pain relief or down time. The procedure is non-invasive and painless. The procedure can be compared to a warm massage. In addition to being used as a cellulite treatment, this method is also effective for reducing the signs of aging. Because it helps to make the skin firmer it can reduce wrinkles and sagging of the skin.
