Also known as SEM, Search engine marketing is the latest instrument in the hands of the marketing departments of the companies. Over the past couple of years, there has been a paradigm shift in the ways companies used to market their products. In fact, the entire idea has pretty much reversed, from broadcast to narrow-cast. Amongst marketing methods on the internet, Search engine marketing is the latest one. Probably you have wondered, at least some point in time, that how do these search engines make money? Why do they provide a service free of cost? Well, “Search engine marketing” is the answer to both these questions. A major chunk of their revenue comes from SEM, and they provide you a service without any charge because they charge the ones who market on their platform. SEM refers to the type of internet marketing used these days to promote websites through the search engines by increasing their visibility on the search engine result pages. SEM’s purpose is to put the website on the first page viewed on the screen, when the prospective customers search for a relevant keyword. There are several ways to do it, for instance through paid inclusion, contextual advertising, search engine optimization and paid placements. Search engine optimization (SEO) is also used to market through search engines. SEO refers to optimizing the website by using specific key words and links associated with the kind of product or service that you offer. SEO can be considered as a branch of SEM. Companies advertising through search engines might have to pay in some cases, but SEO is free of cost, because in this case the marketing companies do not require any special services of the search engine. The customer simply searches through the search engine, and if his search matches with the key words used for search engine optimization, the website automatically shows up on the search results page. Another type of SEM is paid inclusion. In this case the search engine charges other websites a fee in order to be included in their search index. They are also known as sponsored links, and whenever a customer searches for keywords which match the description of the sponsored link, the link shows up on the results page. The primary advantage of SEM is that it is very effective and cost efficient, as well. It targets just the right customer. When a customer searches for some keyword or product on the internet, it is obvious that he has a need for it, and he is willing to buy it. By showing up in the results page of the search engine, the websites greatly increase its chance of making a sale of whatever it sells, and that too at a considerably low cost. SEM has developed to a level that if you require marketing your website through search engines, there are professional individuals and firms available who specialize in it, and they can provide services ranging from simple SEO to full-fledged SEM plans.
