India is a land of many mysteries. Since time immortal India and various parts of it have been associated with many historical stories. India is also one of the most colorful and vibrant nations in the world. Indian history and culture is famous for being very exciting. Stories of great wars and heroic winning, of great men of knowledge and intellect and of men of spiritual powers are common in India. Fairs, also known as Mela in the local term are an important part of Indian culture. One of the most popular Indian Fair is Pushkar Fair. It takes place every year in the majestic desert state of Rajasthan. The fair is a five day affair during which people from across the country come here to do business deals, open shops here and of course to tour the Mela.
Pushkar is one of the five holiest centers of Hinduism. A dip in the holy water of Pushkar is believed to relieve you from all your sins and ensure an entry in heaven. This small town of Pushkar is 14kms away from the Holy city of Ajmer. The annual Pushkar Fair transforms this small city into a riot of colors and people. The fair attracts thousands of people from India and abroad. The whole of Pushkar is transformed into a large canvass on which there are many small make-shift shops, selling you a variety of products, food-joints, tattooing shops, Astrology and palmistry centre and many more things. People swarm Pushkar with friends and family. One of the major attractions in Pushkar is the cattle fair. Cattle owners from across India bring their cattle to sell them and buy new ones. A variety of cattle including camels, cows, goats, buffalos and donkeys can be seen here. Traders come here to buy cattle in bulk.
The cattle here are not just for sale and purchase but they are also involved in fun activities. Camel race is a popular event and attracts tourists in large number. Other cattle races are also attainted by tourists and traders in large numbers. There are more than 400 temples in Pushkar which are major sightseeing options. Pushkar is the only place in India where there is a temple devoted to Lord Brahma. The Ghats are centre of many activities. You can find many palmists here who can read your palm and tell you about your past and future. To believe on them or not is up to oneself but it is a fun activity.
The fair happens during the months of October and November. It’s a five day affair so be sure that you are packaging enough to stay here. The nearest airport from Pushkar is Jaipur. Jaipur is well connected to all major cities in India by air, railways and roadways. The nearest railway station to Pushkar is Ajmer so the main bus stands. Buses are available every 15 minutes from Ajmer to Pushkar. There are many hotels and small motels in Pushkar where you can stay. Pushkar fair has no dearth of fun activities. Ride a camel, get your body tattooed and pierced, eat local delicacies and so much more to do.
The Fair is not just popular among Indian but many foreign tourists also come here to see true colors and traditions of India. Come here to experience this centuries old city and fair.
