The essential quality of goal setting is that it provides you with both short-term and long-term motivation and focus on acquiring the knowledge and skills necessary to organize your time to insure you get the best of life. Individuals from all different fields from athletes to successful business entrepreneurs know the value of goal setting.
Once you have set your short-term goals and long-term goals you will be able to chart your progress and actually see how each stage of your goals has been successfully completed and you will sense personal satisfaction at having met your goals. This improves both your level of self-confidence and level of competence as you become more aware of your capabilities
Set your goals on what you want to do with your personal life and determine what short term and long term goals are needed to achieve what you desire. Be specific about your goal setting making sure that they are manageable targets and then be diligent in tracking results. An example of a manageable goal would be to have daily and weekly sets of goals. This would allow you to progress toward your ultimate life goals and the feeling of accomplishment that comes with it.
The following are the six attributes required of good goal setting:
Attitude: You should determine if any aspect of your mind or behavior would be a hindrance to achieving any of your goals. If there is a problem – deal with it. Attitude is an essential ingredient of effective goal setting;
Education: You don’t have to be a genius or highly educated to be successful. But, you may need training in a particular area. If so, take advantage of the resources that may be made available to you;
Family: Don’t ever leave your family out of your plans. They will be part of the equation, so be certain to give them due consideration;
Finances: Take into consideration your current financial situation and determine what role it may play in achieving your objectives. Once determined, set your goal to a “realistic” level that you know you will be able to reach;
Fitness: A healthy body feeds a healthy mind. A mind that is needed to do all that is necessary to reach your goals. If you have a health problem you should do what you can to remedy the problem.
Time Management: “All work and no play…”, you’ve heard the saying. Manage your time wisely. Not too much “on duty” time and not too much “off duty” time. Many entrepreneurs have fallen victim to the over-worked syndrome. Build leisure time into your plans.
In summary, set your lifetime goals at 25 years, then break them down to 5 year plans, then break them down to 1 year plans, then 6 months, then weekly, then daily. Then write down a “to-do-list” for that day. Repeat this process daily and always check your results.
The fundamentals of goal setting are not difficult and when done properly will produce results very close to your intended objective.

Nick Missos was a Warsaw, Indiana 9th grader who wanted to be on the wrestling team. He had two things going against him: he was very weak, and he wa…
