With camping and RV season just around the corner, you may be considering the purchase of a new RV or motor home. If you are you will soon be struggling with the decision of choosing between a gas and a diesel RV if you are not already. There are some big differences between these two types of RVs and the engines that power them. Read on to learn the differences between them and find out which choice is best for you. The first thing you should know about the difference between these two is how they operate at a fundamental level. Gasoline engines operate by compressing the fuel, injecting air, and then igniting it with a spark. This combustion pushes the piston in the cylinder, which sends power to the drive train. A diesel engine operates by mixing air and diesel fuel and compressing it until it explodes, which pushes the piston. The key difference here is that the diesel engine does not ignite the fuel. This key difference is in the fuel itself. Diesel fuel is non volatile, has a strong odor, and becomes thick in cold weather. This means that it does not evaporate and can be stored for long periods of time, but it can be problematic in cold weather. Gasoline is volatile, evaporates quickly, and is flammable and combustible. This means that it cannot be stored for long periods of time as it will evaporate or go bad. It also means that it can catch fire or explode if it contacts a flame. Now that you have a basic understanding of how each of these engines operates, it is time to discuss how these differences translate into an RV in the real world. Basically, a Diesel powered RV has much more towing power, a longer engine lifespan, gets better fuel efficiency, and has lower emissions. This all sound great but now for the downsides, diesel RVs are significantly more costly, have more expensive fuel, fuel is a bit more rare, they have more expensive and specialized maintenance, and they are louder and give off a strong odor. By comparison gasoline RVs are cheaper, the engines do not last as long, they have less towing power, have lower fuel efficiency, and can be serviced in a standard auto shop. So what does all this mean to you and your decision? Well, here is the bottom line, for most people gasoline RVs are the better choice from a cost standpoint. The extra expense of diesel fuel and the more expensive engine just do not justify the benefits of better efficiency and longer engine life. The only exception is if you plan on owning the RV for a long time and plan on putting a significant amount of miles on it, or if you really need a lot of towing power. In these cases, the extra engine life and towing power will be worth the extra cost to you in the end. So now that you know the differences between the two, you can better make up your mind on which ton get. Be sure to look into Nevada New & Used RVs and RVs and Motorhomes in Nevada.
