The little things can make or break life. Something like a cool breeze can allow you to fondly remember a certain night, while something like sensitivity to a cold glass of water can make you want to forget your problems. From cosmetic imperfections to functional issues with your teeth, there are very few things you should have to live with. Let's explore some of the most common dental problems your dentist can help you lessen or solve completely.

1. Missing Teeth

Missing teeth are the most common problem with a person's smile. While there should be 32 adult teeth (28 without wisdom teeth) in a person's mouth, the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research has found that the average adult only has 24 to 25 teeth in his or her mouth. Given that missing teeth may look unattractive and invite other problems like gum disease, this represents a common problem. The good news is that a dentist can replace missing teeth using different techniques. Partial or complete dentures, implants and bridges represent the most common fixes to this issue.

2. Sensitivity

Teeth become sensitive for numerous reasons. The enamel of a tooth could be thin, it could be breached, or the pulp of a tooth may be irritated. You may have fractured teeth from bruxism. The causes are many, which makes finding the perfect solution to this problem a difficult process. There are an equal number of ways to treat sensitive teeth. Simply switching to a toothpaste designed to make teeth less sensitive may be enough to dissuade your teeth from complaining when you drink a cold glass of water or sip on some tea. If you have problems that require the work of a dentist, then scheduling an appointment with a dentist specializing in progressive dentistry like Dr. Nate Lewis is the best idea. You'll solve the symptoms and the causes of your problems by doing so.

3. Bad Breath

Bad breath is another common problem associated with a person's smile. It tends to stem from an overabundance of bacteria in a person's mouth, which in turn causes breath to smell funny. The good news is that this is yet another problem that your dentist can help solve. He or she can teach you how to better care for your mouth while treating any existing causes of bacterial growth like abscessed teeth or gum disease.

4. Chipped Teeth

Chewing involves a large amount of force. This force can wear teeth down, which in turn can result in chipped, fractured or broken teeth. These jagged teeth can become an eyesore and a danger within the mouth. They can tear at the soft tissue of the mouth, and they may be more prone to forming cavities due to their natural tendency to harbor plaque in tough-to-reach spots. Your dentist can help solve these issues by smoothing out the enamel of your teeth and providing restorations where they are needed.

5. Stained Teeth or Off-Color Restorations

The dentin underneath the enamel of your teeth provides most of the apparent color of your pearly whites. This tissue can change colors as the result of your teeth aging, the presence of acid in your mouth and even the foods you eat. This can result in teeth that gradually grow less white. Existing restorations may not match this new color, and restorations like porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns may present imperfections that can tarnish your smile. Your dentist can solve these problems by replacing your restorations or by whitening your teeth.

Making Your Smile Perfect

While it may take some time and a few trips to your dentist, you can make your smile perfect. You can overcome the imperfections common to a person's smile, which in turn can allow you to smile without worry. Couple these fixes with the right amount of superb oral hygiene, and these problems may be the kind that you face only one time in your lifetime.
