- Prevent return hospital stays- patients who had an extended hospital stay due to their severe injury or illness may develop trouble adjusting to everyday activities. The long bedrest can cause the patients to develop difficulty with balance and posture due to muscle wasting. OT can help them to make coordination and balance with exercise, rebuild their muscle strength and adjustment/adaptive options.
- Regain independence- Those patients who have participated in the after-stroke rehabilitative therapy have proved better ability to perform self-care tasks and they are more likely to maintain these abilities, compared to the patients who did not have undergone occupational therapy, the researchers found.
- Develop memory aids- Memory loss is a problem which most of the people develop over time, or due to injury or illness. In most cases of memory loss are ascribed to advanced age, but in other cases, injury, illness or lack of nutrition can be the cause. OT for memory loss consists of brain exercises and tricks which can help to improve organization, memory and attention.
- Gain meaningful employment- One of the main causes of depression in those with physical disabilities is the inability to return to work or find meaningful employment.
