Montgomery. Montgomery is rich in history from the Civil War to civil rights. Historic state capitol building is leading the list of must-see attractions where Jefferson Davis took the pledge of office as President of the Confederate States of America in 1861, and where, almost a century later, the Selma to Montgomery civil rights march ended with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. providing a moving speech from its steps.

Alabama State Capitolr

In 1861, the Confederate States of America was born in the Senate Chamber, where associates from Southern states voted to set up a new nation. The U.S. secretary of the interior designated the capitol as a National Historic Landmark in 1960. The Alabama Historical Commission which was started in 1970 oversaw a major renovation and restoration effort. Most of this work was finished in 1992, but efforts to restore and improve the historical character of the building are continuous.

The archivist of today has to deal with records in PCs, on video and audio tape, and on several types of film as well as increased amounts of more traditional materials. The department is attempting to continue the following programs despite diminishing financial resources as priority services i.e., assistance to state agencies and local governments in the maintenance of their records of historical value; basic reference service; basic educational tours and programs to school children, visitors, and interested citizens; primary reference service; work to preserve modern records in delicate formats, such as computer records, videotapes and photographs; maintenance of the security of collections held by the Archives; and the use of new information technology to increase the services of department. Now, in its second century of service, the Alabama Department of Archives and History is conscious of its responsibility to preserve the records of its past and to serve the information needs of a future generation of researchers.
