Get Your Neighbors Involved for Home Security

The standard definition of “neighbor” is “one living or located near another.” However, anyone who has ever lived in a neighborhood knows that neighbors are much more than that. Neighbors are what make neighborhoods either good or bad. When everyone knows each other and gets together for block parties and watches out for each other’s kids that is a functional neighborhood and is likely a safer neighborhood. When neighbors shut themselves inside their houses and don’t bother to even meet the other people on their street, the neighborhood feels like everyone is out for himself and it might not be as safe as it could be.

If you want to make your home safer, there are many steps you can take. For instance, you can have a home security system installed in your house, which will provide you with a warning if someone is trying to break in. Or, you could get a guard dog that will not only alert you that something is wrong, but will also attack anyone who tries to harm your family. However, one of the best actions you can take to make your home safer is to get to know your neighbors on a personal level.

When people establish relationships with each other, they become invested in their well-being. If your neighbors know you, know your kids, have eaten at your house, they are more likely to call for help if they see someone suspicious lurking around your property. If you do have a home security system installed and the siren goes off, the neighbors that know you are probably going to do something immediately rather than waiting to see if more trouble arises.

When you are on vacation, your neighbors will be more than happy to feed your pets, mow your lawn, pick up your mail and newspapers and just generally keep an eye on your house. Even the best monitoring company can’t compete with vigilant neighbors that are in the immediate vicinity of your house. Neighbors have been known to identify burglars before the alarm is ever triggered, which gives emergency personnel even more time to respond and a better chance of catching the intruder.

Nothing can keep your house 100 percent secure. It’s a fact of life that if criminals want in, they are going to find a way to get in. However, enlisting your neighbors’ help in watching your home improves the odds of apprehension and of minimizing any damage done. Don’t forget to be a good neighbor as well and watch over your neighbors’ properties too. They will definitely return the favor.
