Well, the best protection from damage in storms is to install hurricane shutters over all your windows and glass doors. Hurricane shutters are the products that protect doors and windows from objects thrown by the wind. However it is not only windows and doors breaking that you actually need to worry about; sudden pressure changes in the house when the glass of window is broken during the storm can cause major structural damage, and that is much more expensive to repair than a mere broken window.
Most of the people have used just plywood in order to cover their windows in the past. It is certainly easy - and cheap of course- but many homeowners found that their temporary plywood shutters blew off during the dangerous wind storms that come with a hurricane. Plywood over your windows and doors can be a huge waste of money and time as well because they don't provide as much protection as permanent shutters and they come off easily. I would say that roll-down shutters or similar type do a much better job of protecting your household property, and because they are anchored securely, will not blow off during the wind storm. Hurricane shutters are tested at the manufacturing level so as to make sure that they are up to the standards required to resist the wind and objects flung at high speed during a hurricane.
Moreover, impact resistant windows are also another viable option, and are a good choice when you are building a new home. Although these kinds of windows look outwardly the same as regular windows, they are the products that offer considerably more protection from the wind. Well, when you add in roll-down shutters, your household property will be twice as protected.
Having a look at the points given above will surely help you to protect your home against the wind damage.
