If you work in construction and have your eye on a role further up the chain, then there are steps that you can take to improve your chances of getting more responsibility, more pay and a more fulfilling role.
The first step you are likely to want to take is to move into a supervisory role. Whilst, the right approach to work and a display of interest may be all that it takes to get you there, it doesn’t hurt to stand out from the crowd. Whether you look at getting SSSTS training off your own back or suggest that your employers send you on a course, SSSTS (Site Supervisors Safety Training Scheme) is likely to be the first step on the road to moving up the ladder.
SSSTS training offers you many skills on top of those which you will have learnt simply by carrying out the trade, and the role of supervisor on a construction site is one that carries many responsibilities and therefore needs a good deal of focussed knowledge.
An SSSTS course will give you a full overview of the duties that you will be taking on when becoming a supervisor as well as a much deeper understanding of the importance of safety in the workplace and how to increase safety as a supervisor. Not only will such a course help you to deal with the role far more effectively, but it will also give you the ability to carry out risk assessments, inductions and even understand how to identify and put a stop to bad practices in the workplace.
With so much competition in construction, sitting back and simply hoping you will be offered more responsibility and higher pay is likely to be fruitless. Being proactive and increasing your skills off your own back or showing your willing to undertake further training is likely to lead to far better results and see you progress far quicker.
