When it comes to applying for a current account online, some people may be unsure of what exactly the process will involve and what information they might need to have to hand. But as this is an easy and convenient way to set one up, you might want to know some things in advance.
One thing you'll need to know is that there are some requirements you must meet, such as being a UK resident and - depending on the type of bank account you're looking for - being over 18 years of age. Of course, there are a whole host of options available to those under this age and most providers will have a wide range of accounts tailored to the needs of every kind of user. But as with all types of account, it will be worth checking a few of these out before you make a final decision.
Once you've had the opportunity to compare bank accounts and choose one that suits your needs, you'll want to get started on the application form - which most providers will allow you to access through their website. The first thing you are likely to be asked for is your name and address, as well as your nationality. You may then be asked if you have children and how many there are, plus some contact information including a daytime telephone number. You can provide a home and/or mobile line here, but it may also be worth giving a work number if one is available. This will be useful should the bank need to contact you about your application, and you might be able to specify which contact method is the most preferable.
For those who have not been living at their current address for long, details of previous addresses and postcodes are likely to be asked for. Therefore digging out some old correspondence that has this information on might be a good idea as often these can be tricky to remember off the top of your head. If you are able to fill out this section in full, you should then be able to move on to entering your employment or income details. This might include salary information and expenditure, as the bank is likely to want to give you a current account that is best suited to your circumstances. In fact, many providers can extend the range of facilities they offer when larger monthly payments are being deposited.
If you are going to want a chequebook, overdraft or debit card, this might be asked of you during the application process. However, many banks will offer basic bank accounts that have the option of just being linked to a cash card that will give you access to your money at thousands of high street machines across the UK.
One of the last things you'll need to do on the form is confirm all the details you've entered are correct. This will also provide one last chance to check and make any changes if necessary before the submission is made. You should also be asked if you agree to the terms and conditions of the application and if you are happy to be contacted by related partners of the bank. Obviously, different institutions have different procedures in place for this type of thing, but for the most part these things are what you can expect when applying for a current account online. All you then have to do is wait and see if you've been successful.
