Every discipline has its fundamentals. Elementary principles provide the foundation upon which the rest is built. Take for example mathematics, where the basic rules of how to add subtract divide and multiply have been used to create such branches as calculus and linear algebra. The some idea holds true for business. With business, you could say that there a few general rules and ideas which govern and generally characterize it. While we will not take the time to list them presently, you can easily recall a few of the basic objectives and methods. And whether the business is a mom and pop shop or a highly specialized multinational technology company, the methods of doing business are truly not that different. The one place where that is made very evident is in the way the bookkeeping is done. And while some of this uniformity may come from the fact that there are certain laws which require it to be so, there is great consensus about what methods of bookkeeping are logical and make sense and which ones are not. This is because they, they being all of the different methods of treating certain item in the accounting world, are all attempting to measure and take care of the way business is done. Knowing this, one easily understands the benefits to having a solid bookkeeping system in place. It lets you know how you stand and gives you the data to better prepare for the future. It keeps you organized and provides you with a language that everyone can understand. However, while there is great uniformity in the application of accounting rules there is much less similarity in the quality of accounting services available. Some bookkeeping firms are reliable, efficient and honest. They will take the time to understand what you are looking to do and how you are doing it. Others are fly by night in nature, and will wind up causing you a great deal of headache in the end. The key to good books is a good book keeper. And the key to that good book keeper is finding one who will take care of your needs at a cost that you can afford. So when it comes to getting back to basics and ensuring your business is running efficiently and in the most optimal manner possible, you will go back to the most fundamental part of your business, and that most fundamental area is your bookkeeping.
