Getting Inspiration from Flush Finish Doors

I was recently in an office building where I saw flush finish doors for the first time. I was impressed with the clean and simple lines which gave the doorway a contemporary look and decided that since I was about to make some renovations in my own office, I would opt for a flush finish door in some areas. It is strange how you can get inspiration from places where you would never expect it. This was also the case when a few years ago I visited a stately home and saw a still room in the basement and then decided that I would like a similar one.

Let me explain for the benefit of those who do not know what a still room is. A still room was a large room to be found in all castles, stately homes and other institutes from the mediaeval times and could be called a distillery. It was an important room in the house and was under the direct supervision of the lady of the house and the place where she would spend a great deal of time, along with her daughters, wards and other ladies of the house. She would gather these females in order to teach them the skills which would be of advantage to them when they got married and had to run their own households.

The still room was in part a science lab, a kitchen and in part an infirmary. It was the place where all the lotions, potions, medicines, and other substances were produced, including soaps, polishes, essential oils and candles. It was also the place where all the preservations were carried out such as the drying of flowers and the making of jams, jellies and pickles from the local fruit and vegetables.

Herbs and plants were grown in the kitchen garden and then sent to the still room for the making of all the household necessities. Later on as more and more women decided that they did not wish to learn all these skills, the still room became mainly a side room to the kitchen where wine, beers and jams were made. I have always been fascinated by the whole history of the still room and since I have been making jams and preserving vegetables since I was young, I decided that I wanted a small still room of my own.

So when the opportunity arose, I made sure I took it and now I enjoy pottering around down there after a hard days work. So to get back to the original train of thought I now need to do my research and find the best way to go about fitting flush finish doors in my office.
