Becoming a police officer is not just about passing the police exam; it is also about getting a job once you have completed the requirements. If you are unable to get a job in your local area, you may have to look for a job elsewhere. However, in most cases, you can land police jobs when you finish academy in your state.

Police Jobs—Do They Pay Well?

How well police jobs pay depends on several factors. For example, it may depend on how well you scored on the police test. It may also have something to do with the location and the city that you are looking in. Different cities and municipalities have different wages based on what the city budget can afford.

For example, the highest paying city in the US for police jobs is Washington DC, because of the nature of their work. Most municipalities start officers out at around thirty five thousand per year. However, different cities allow for more raises than others depending on tenure and seniority, as well as the location you are set to patrol. In addition, you have to take into consideration that some areas are more dangerous than others, and pay is likely to be more in these dangerous urban settings.

Police Jobs—What Are the Odds?

1. Test scores

2. Physical condition

3. Education

There are many things that can improve your odds of landing police jobs, after taking the police exam. One of the biggest things that will determine your chances of getting a job is your score on the police test. The higher your test scores and your grades in academy and college, the better your chances of landing a job ahead of other candidates will be.

You will also have a better chance of landing police jobs if you are in good physical condition. If you have education on your side in addition to the academy, such as an associates or bachelors degree, you will also have a better chance of coming out ahead of other applicants without this education.

Police Jobs—Is It a Reputable Job?

1. Follow police procedures

2. Conduct yourself as an officer at all times

Being a police officer is a very reputable job as long as you treat it properly. Cops get a bad rap when it comes to certain urban areas, because so many of the officers do not conduct themselves properly on or off duty. They do not follow procedure and therefore end up ruining the reputation for everyone. Your conduct and behavior will be put under scanner in police exam and police tests.

It is important that once you become an office and land police jobs that you take your job seriously. Follow all police procedures at all times, and never flounder. A police exam is likely to quiz you on several aspect of your state law system. You should also conduct yourself as an officer of the law whenever you are in public, whether you are on duty or not.
