Back pain is one of the most common ailments that people complain about, but many times your doctor may fail to pinpoint the exact cause of your back pain, thus preventing you from getting lasting cure. One of the reasons why doctors experience some difficulty in identifying the cause of your back pain is perhaps the wide variety of possible causes of back pain. Poor posture, prolonged sitting, lack of exercise, accidents, misalignment of the spine, diseases, and some serious medical conditions may all cause back pain.

And here’s another thing to consider when you decide to seek medical help for back pain: General practitioners may have little experience in the actual treatment of back pain. Many of them will simply prescribe pain medication or recommend rest along with common home treatments. This is fine if your back pain is caused by nothing more than stress or overexertion. But, what if the pain is actually caused by a misalignment of your spine or bones? What if something’s broken somewhere? It is best to consult a specialist – a chiropractor in particular – to identify the root cause of your back pain, especially if your condition has been going on for a while.

A specialist will be better able to identify the root cause of your back pain simply because he is more likely to be familiar with the structure of your back, from the largest muscles down to the smallest nerves. But, you should be aware of how your back is structured as well. After all, YOU should be the one most conce
ed about your health and well-being. Understanding what your doctor is talking about when you discuss your back pain with him will definitely work to your advantage.

Your spinal column is made up of bones, muscles, and nerves. What holds your spine together is its network of discs, tendons, ligaments, and connective tissues. Your lower back is made up of large muscle groups and bone structures, including your backbone and hip joints. Your hip joints are connected to your pelvis and they both connect to your spinal column at the lower back. These large bones also attach to your legs, which provide the necessary vertical support to your spine.

The manner in which our spine is structured and the way each element is situated gives us our ability to move in all directions. This complex structure also provides the flexibility we need for our day-to-day tasks. And when this structure is misaligned, damaged, or disrupted in any way, that is when you experience back pain. The nature and degree of disruption dictates the nature and severity of the pain you experience. A specialist understands this simple fact much better than other specialists, which is why it is best to consult one for relief from back pain.

The next time you feel a pain in your back, think twice before going to your family doctor or neighborhood general practitioner. Get specialist care and help to be sure about the diagnosis and treatment for this all too common but difficult condition.
