GIVE YOUR LOG BURNER A SPRING CLEAN

Spring has finally arrived and there is no better way to give your stove a massive thank you for keeping you warm during the winter, by sweeping your chimney out ready for autumn. You should give your wood stove a service at least once a year and with the change of the season, spring cleaning is an essential part of quality wood burning and a key part to the longevity of your log burner. 1. USE THE CORRECT FUEL If you burn quality fuel throughout the heating season it will make your life easier when it comes to cleaning it out. Avoid burning damp or treated wood, as these can cause tar condensation and leave black marks on your stove glass. 2. SWEEP THE CHIMNEY We advise you to sweep your chimney at least once a year, so while the weathers getting warmer in spring it’s the perfect opportunity. Cleaning out your chimney makes sure your flue pipe or chimney is kept clear & safe! We recommend that you get your chimney cleaned by a professional; it can get very messy as there is lots of equipment involved! A chimney sweep also has the knowledge to point out problems they spot. 3. PERFORM A STOVE MOT Check over your entire stove – particularly the internal parts. Inspect all the seals and replace the seals between the door and glass. Make sure the riddling grates moves freely and check grate bars for any damage. While looking over the stove door, check the hinges are working and look for any cracks in the glass. CLEAN INSIDE To ensure perfect wood burning conditions, it’s vital to look after the inside of your stove and wire brushes are the top tip for getting the tricky areas. Remember to clean the roof but leave a layer of ashes on the bottom of the stove, as this helps to insulate and protect from the burning heat. 5. CLEANING THE GLASS Products are made with an air-wash system which helps keep the glass clean while you’re burning wood. If your glass does need a spring clean, you can use stove glass cleaner or, if you burn just wood, get a damp cloth and dip it in the wood ash to clean the glass. 6. SHOW OFF YOUR STOVE Have your stove looking its best because we know the appearance of your stove is also important. Use some elbow grease to give the outside of your wood burning stove a good clean using a lint free cloth or shoe brush, to wipe away any soot or dust.
