Having dingy or discolored teeth is not only unaesthetic, it could also be an indicator that there are other oral health issues taking place. Luckily, most people can quickly brighten their smile and keep it white for months on end with a few changes to their daily habits, better hygiene practices, and professional cleaning services.

Why Teeth Become Stained

Teeth can become stained for a long list of reasons and almost everyone will experience at least some discoloration throughout their lifetime. Primarily, teeth become stained because of bad oral hygiene practices. They can also become brown or yellow due to certain foods and drinks that are consumed regularly such as soda, wine, dark juices, coffee, and certain teas. Finally, severe discoloration can take place when the root of the tooth has become damaged or due to certain medications that are taken such as those containing tetracycline and doxycycline.

Types of Staining

The two forms of staining include internal staining and external staining. External staining is much more common and takes place on the porous outer layer of the teeth known as enamel. Over time, food debris, plaque, and tartar can get caught in these pores and will lead to discoloration if they are not regularly removed with brushing, flossing, and professional cleaning. Internal staining, on the other hand, takes place well below the surface and may be the result of over-fluoridation, medication, hormonal changes, and trauma to the mouth.

Professional Whitening Services

The first thing that can be done about brightening a smile is to visit the dentist. The dentist will be able to tell patients if the staining is on the outer or inner layers of the teeth, and they may be able to brighten the teeth in a single appointment. Professional whitening procedures performed by dentists from Toothworks and similar offices lift stains on the outer layer of the teeth, generally with a powerful peroxide solution. These services are targeted and carefully overseen to prevent any discomfort.

Maintaining a Bright Smile

Once out of the office, it will be the patient's responsibility to maintain their bright new smile. In most situations this can be done with impeccable oral hygiene habits, including brushing and flossing multiple times a day as well as avoiding teeth-staining foods. The dentist may also suggest the use of whitening trays in the coming weeks to continue lifting deeper stains. Discolored teeth do not need to be an unavoidable fact of life for any patient. There are now more options than ever to brighten a smile and keep teeth whiter throughout the years.
