Glucosamine is an amino sugar. Glucosamine (C6H13NO5) is a prominent precursor in the biochemical synthesis of glycosylated proteins and lipids. It is found as a main component in the skeleton of external crustaceans and arthropods. It is one of the most abundant monosaccharide. Its commercial production is carried out by the hydrolysis the exoskeleton of crustaceans.

It is the most consumed natural product in the treatment of osteoarthritis. It is formed from glucose. It is the starting point for the synthesis of glycosaminoglycans (GAGs), including hyaluronic acid, a constituent of the fluid in the joints. Supplements of glucosamine with our food can help thicken gelatinous fluid in the joints and to improve intervertebral discs and connective tissue, also known connective tissue.

Precautions

People with diets low in potassium, heart disease, kidney disease with high blood pressure should avoid glucosamine supplements.
Diabetics should keep in mind that it contains glucose that may raise blood sugar level and consequently insulin levels which may hamper diabetic treatment.

Sometimes there are cautions about the use of glucosamine sulphate (GS) in persons with allergies to sulphides, which produces dog asthma and urticaria.

Side effects

High doses of GS may cause gastric problems, nausea, diarrhea, indigestion and heartburn. It should be provided with meals to try to avoid these problems.

It should not be taken with heart or with insulin medications. Those who take diuretics may require high amounts of GS daily which accelerate the side effects.

The benefits of taking the drug in many people obtained over time, it generally takes 2 to 8 weeks to feel results.
