There are around five billion cell phone users and fifty one million have smart phones or mini computers. Corporate accounts usually upgrade their phones every 12-15 months. Even the youngsters today like to change their mobiles every couple of months/years. The question is what do we do with our old cell phones? Do we let it sit in our drawers and keep cluttering our house with unused electronic devices? In these innovative times there are many alternatives for us. The first choice that comes to our mind is to sell old cell phones and get money for it in return. The extra dough is like an additional incentive for a thing you are no longer using. The cash for cell phone is a pretty good idea but not the only option. We can also donate our old mobiles or give away for charity or fundraisers. Many of us just toss our old phone in the garbage. By doing this we are harming the environment in so many ways. The battery of our cell phone contains toxic materials like lead, arsenic, cadmium and beryllium. These non biodegradable substances are trashed in landfills and may take thousands of years to break down. If these toxins leak in the local habitat, it can have adverse effects on the environment affecting the water sources, wildlife and even on the food that we eat. If the phone is no longer needed one can dispose it in an eco friendly way. Recycling an old cell phone is as easy as recycling the other everyday products. The statistics provided by the Environment Protection Agency (EPA) in this field says that, recycling 1 million cell phones every year is equivalent to taking 1,368 cars off the road. In a way it means less pollution and saving the world from the harmful effects like global warming. This way we are helping our own self. There are many companies which help us in recycling our electronic devices and even provide cash for cell phones. We can also do our bit by using solar chargers or switching to a power saver battery, so we need to charge it less often. We can conserve energy by doing small things like these. It becomes a win-win situation for us as consumers and our environment. We can also use high quality accessories for our cell phones like cell covers to protect it from damage. This in turn will help us to retain our phones for longer time.
