Reject re- = back + -jacere = to throw I believe that rejection is the number one fear of the human species. The thing that boggles my mind is that if we’re so afraid of rejection, how is it that we’ve become so good at it? Especially since we don’t like having the experience? It makes no sense. Oh, to be sure, we don’t always characterize our behavior as rejection, but just think for a minute. When was the last time someone approached you with something new to you? A new way to practice spiritual principles in your life? A new business opportunity? A new way to stop fighting with your partner? Anything new? What did you say right after you heard the new idea? Taking it down to the bottom line, was your first reaction a yes or a no? If I had to guess, I’d wager that 90% of us say no first. The roots of the word create a wonderful image of what’s actually happening in a scenario like this one. What we do is throw back the idea through our rejection of it. Why ever do we do this?! It’s because we’re afraid. Of what? Of the idea that IF we say yes to whatever the new idea is, we’re going to have to change in order to benefit from it. Consider leaving immediate rejection of the new off your menu of Instant Reactions to New Things. Ask: How can I use whatever new idea comes my way to benefit myself and all other beings today? Infinition: I don’t like to feel rejected so I am giving up rejection as an immediate response today. Instead of throwing back an idea, I’m going to hold it lightly and wonder how it might bless me and the whole world.
