Golfing popularity has reached new heights in recent years. With this surge in popularity, it is only natural that there would be an upswing in playing as well. As the recognized gentleman’s game there is a very real drive for young and ambitious business men to take part in the game. But new golfers need to be aware of a few serious issues. Golf is a very serious game, requiring focus, attention to detail, and an unforgiving exactness. Golf, simply said, is and can be a very demanding game. When playing against an opponent often one only has to worry about the skill level of said opponent. But golf is a game most often played against oneself. And this is something new golfers need to be aware of. Because no one is traditionally as hard an opponent as oneself. There is a weightiness to golf that few people are able to resist; a seriousness of spirit which can sometimes impress itself on newer members of the game. While this is only proper, as golf is indeed a time honored game, I would urge new players to resist taking golf too seriously at first. It is important to learn to have fun while golfing before trying to learn the deep mechanics and mastery of golf. Because golf, while being a serious game, is still just a game. It is far too easy to forget this, as golfing is easy to play but hard to master. It is not unusual to know someone who has golfed their entire life and never played the perfect game. So if you head into golf with the typical sports mindset of having to win, you will only be hurting yourself. Another thing young golfers need to be aware of is the ever expanding market of technology (often quite expensive) that goes along with golf. There is sportswear, titanium clubs, changing golf balls, turf shoes, and the list just goes on and on. All of this new and emerging technology is beneficial to golfers, and has helped people truly play better. But all the gear in the world won’t improve someone who doesn’t have a basic grasp of the game. So while getting the latest and greatest gear might knock your score down by a stroke or two, odds are just a little more practice and time spent on the course would have much more dramatic results. In the end that is the most important thing; learning to love and appreciate the game rather than trying to master the game of golf. It is much better for the game of golf, not to mention the new players themselves, if a hundred new people learned to enjoy golf than one person successfully goes pro. So the next time you head down to the local course, or are out at a famous resort , take a moment to slow down and appreciate where you are. Because golf is a game, and as such it is meant to be enjoyed and appreciated.
