Unless your children have grown up on a farm, I will guess they probably don’t have any idea what gleaning is. Have some fun with with this Bible object lesson taken from Ruth 2:17 which says, “So she gleaned in the field until even.”
Here’s what you do:
The object you will use for this lesson will be a basket filled with some vegetables. On the back of each vegetable attach a card or label that says “gleaning”,“prayers”, “Bible verses”, “Sunday School”, “God’s Word”, “focus”, “remember”, “wise gleaner”. Hold each one of these up when the word that is in bold below is said. The kids will like this little bit of humor.
Show your basket to your children and ask the following questions to help stimulate discussion:
1. What am I holding: (Wait for response such as a basket with vegetables.)
2. Who might use a basket like this? (Wait for responses and lead the kids to think of a farmer.)
3. Would a farmer need to use a basket like this sometimes? (Wait for response of “Yes.”)
4. You’re right. A farmer might use a basket like this to gather the harvest he planted earlier in the year.
5. Ask a child to read Ruth 2:17. Use a version that uses the word glean or gleaning in it.
6. Say the following: Let’s learn a little more about this interesting verse and my basket here to show us how to live our lives for God. Let’s lea
3 important points about this truth.
Point 1: Do you know what “gleaning in the field” means? It’s really just a fancy way of explaining how the farmer goes out to his field and gathers all the vegetables that he has grown.
Point 2: Now let’s picture God’s field. God doesn’t have vegetables in His field. Instead, His field is full of prayers and Bible verses that He wants us to feed on so our spirits don’t grow tired or weak. Just like your body needs food, your spirit needs nourishment too. Here are some ways you can go “gleaning” in God’s field.
Point 3:
First: God gleaners gather their food little by little. Be sure you listen to every Bible study lesson you hear. Do your best to come to Sunday School every week.
Second: God gleaners keep their eyes open in the field. This means that you should pay careful attention to each Bible verse you hear. Every bit of God’s Word is important.
Third: Good gleaners pick up everything good they find. This means that you shouldn’t just listen to the Bible lessons that keep your interest, but be ready to focus and listen to God’s Word even when it is hard to do so.
Fourth: God gleaners make sure they hold on to all they’ve gathered. This means you should be careful to remember what you learn about God.
Fifth: If you are hungry for God, be a wise gleaner and go learn all you can about Him.
