Carbohydrates often have a bad name when it comes to some diet plans to lose weight. There are many weight loss programs that severely restrict the amount of carbs that the dieter can eat, while other plans totally forbid dieters from eating any carbs at all. The truth is, carbohydrates are necessary for optimal health, as they contain essential vitamins and minerals for optimal bodily functions and energy levels. However, it is important to distinguish between good carbs and bad carbs. Good Vs Bad Carbohydrates Carbohydrates are your body's main source of energy, and as such, they should never be avoided. However, since not all carbs are alike, it's important to distinguish between those carbs that are good and those that aren't. It's the “bad” carbs that are not so good for the body that should be avoided, or at least reduced in amounts. "Simple" carbohydrates are those that are considered the "bad" carbs, and are rather easy for the body to digest, and provide no real value to you. These simple carbs release sugar into the blood stream in high doses, creating peaks and valleys in your blood sugar levels. This can provide you with a boost of energy for a limited amount of time, after which you will ultimately "crash" from your sugar-high. Foods like cake, cookies, white bread and donuts are considered simple carbs that are high in refined sugar. Although it's ok to have a treat once in a while, it's important not to make simple carbs a staple in your diet. "Complex" carbohydrates are considered "good" carbs, which consist of long-chain sugar molecules that take more time to break down within the body. Therefore, an even amount of energy is provided by these types of carbs. Foods such as whole grain bread and legumes are classified as complex carbs. These carbs have a low glycemic value, which means less sugar is released into the blood stream at more even and consistent rates. Using the Glycemic Index to Rate Carbohydrates In addition to classifying carbs as being either "simple" or "complex", you can also rate these foods based on the glycemic index. This index is an indicator of how fast and high the levels of sugar in your blood will increase after consuming that particular carb in comparison to having pure white sugar. Those foods that are lower on the glycemic index are better for you, while those with a high glycemic value are foods that should be eaten in limited amounts or avoided altogether. The Verdict on Carbs Carbohydrates are essential for maintaining proper bodily functions. It's important to eat a sensible amount of complex carbs that are high in fiber to help with energy levels and digestion. Although it's ok to eat the occasional sugary dessert, this should not become a habit. Stick to complex carbs that are low on the glycemic index - along with a calorie-controlled diet plan - and you should be able to maintain a healthy weight, and even lose weight if you are on a specific plan.
