In "Babette's Feast", a housekeeper spends all of her lottery winnings by treating a congregation for a sumptuous French dinner. When they found out what she did, one of them remarks that she'll be poor for the rest of her life. Her reply is “an artist is never poor.” Gabriel Axel's film is a classic case of man's inherent goodness. Many research papers attempt to explain this. Is man basically good-natured? What do men get out of being moral? The answer to those questions is simple, which is having to do with divine ordination and heavenly rewards. Morality involves selfless concern for the welfare of others and the willingness to sacrifice one's own interest for the sake of being good. It's opposite of the Darwinian imperative, which puts genetic self-interest ahead of all else. According to some research papers, the common view among some Darwinian theorists was that morality is an entirely human construct, something that exists outside of nature. But one research paper refutes the idea, insisting that altruistic behavior originates in biology, that evolution needs to be part of any satisfactory explanation of morality. Another batch of research papers argue that humankind stems from the nicer, more cooperative aspects of behavior in animals that evolved long before humans made their appearance on the scene. Humans and the rest of the mammals have been endowed with a capacity for genuine love, sympathy and care. This can and will one day be fully reconciled with the idea that genetic self-promotion drives the evolutionary process. In short, obedience to certain rules, being good and being punished for being bad, have a place in the evolutionary theory linking humans and other animals. Though there are some research papers that disagree with it, many believe on this.
