Goods that need to be specially packed for transport

Some things need protective packaging if they are to be transported safely from place to place. It may also be more than just a simple matter of making sure the items get properly cushioned and protected from bumps and knocks. Fragile products might benefit from being labelled as such, for example, and anything that could present a potential hazard while in transit must be clearly labelled so those involved can make sure it is handled correctly and not exposed to an inappropriate level of heat or pressure, for example. When arranging long-distance transport for potentially hazardous items, it is often necessary to make sure the shipping boxes are compliant with regulations that relate to the particular type of item, and that they're going to be sent by the right methods. What can safely be shipped over land may be very different from what can safely be shipped by air, for example. Individual countries and regions may also have varying regulations on what can and can't be carried through their borders, and how. The relevant laws in the despatching and receiving countries need to be taken into account as do those of any country where the goods may stop over, when a plane is refuelling for instance. Examples of products that usually call for special shipping boxes and labelling are anything with a petrochemical component, highly flammable liquids and gasses, aerosols, batteries, biological matter (especially animal or human samples), potentially infectious substances, and radioactive materials. However, this is far from an exhaustive list. There are many other items that may fall under 'dangerous goods' legislation in Europe, the USA, or elsewhere. Deciding whether or not an item needs protective packaging or particular shipping arrangements is sometimes tricky, but if in doubt, responsible persons should assume that their products do warrant special treatment and look for the regulations and guidelines that relate to their industry.
