Adding negative keywords to an AdWords campaign is something a lot of people neglect to do.

What they don’t appreciate is the importance of negatives to a successful campaign.

Your click-through-rate (CTR) is an important factor for Google to determine how ‘relevant’ your AdWords campaign is, and CTR is based on:

(Clicks/Impressions) x 100

The more times your ads show without being clicked on, the lower your CTR will be.

One of the things you can do to improve your CTR is influence the ‘Impressions’ figure.

If you are using ‘broad’ matching for the terms in your account (Google allows you to use broad, phrase and exact matching) it is more than likely that your ads are showing for terms that aren’t always appropriate.

You need to identify those terms and add them as negatives.

It’s not that difficult.. really!

The best place to start is in the ‘Reports’ tab found at the top of your AdWords account and specifically the ‘Search Query Report’ – this will show you the terms that have been searched on and you have received a click for.

It can be a very interesting read, especially once you find out you have been paying a lot of money on a term that doesn’t actually have much relevancy to your business!

So why are these terms triggering your ads to show in the first place?

Google uses a method called expanded matching for terms that are entered as a ‘broad’ match.

This means that if you have the word book as a broad term, Google are likely to show your ad for other terms such as books, magazine, magazines and so on.

So it’s important you are continually running the Search Query Report to identify terms you don’t want to be found for so that you don’t waste your budget on clicks that you don’t want!
