Google+ recently opened up its availability to businesses by allowing a Gmail account to control a Google+ Business Page. This new feature to the already individualized Google+ social network will provide business marketing a new avenue to reach consumers and interact with other brands. Bradley Horowitz, vice president for products at Google+ stated in an article for The New York Times, “I expect brands will notice this and will build marketing plans around it.” Local businesses should take particular note because like a Facebook Page, creating a following with a Google+ Business Page is often the best and most emergent way to communicate with consumers and drive the conversation of your followers to reach fringe consumers. These fringe consumers are often friends of friends of friends and can be reached by fresh content shared often enough that it is noticed in the Google+ Stream (like the Facebook Wall). The benefit for businesses with Google+ Business Pages is the ability to create Circles, a concept delivered at the Google+ launch back in June of this year. Being able to control who receives the information is important and is often a knock on Facebook’s Wall concept. How many times have you blocked an Angry Birds score or level update from one of your friends on Facebook? Since professional marketing should not resemble spam, the ability to segment your messages and share content with one “circle” of consumers and not another is a key element local business marketers should feel great about with regard to Google+ Business Pages. Google+ Business Pages, like the individual offering of the social network, offer the ability to +1, or endorse, any content a company shares, +1’s, or comments on. Pages also allow the user to post comments, upload photos, and tag the brand in the content. The Hangout feature also allows businesses to interact with people in their Circles through video conference calling. All of these features are great and may seem right in line with what Facebook already offers. So why is the potential of a Google+ Business Page something to get on board with as soon as possible? What is so important for the online community and local businesses? Search. The real implications of a business page from Google are its ties to the Google search algorithm. Everyone wants to be found. Everyone needs to be found. You need to be as close to and as active with the Google search algorithm as possible. Every time you interact on Google+ it improves its intelligence and improves the search results. In the search engine optimization world, content is king but content is found through search.
