Goose hunting is an outdoor sporting activity that a significant number of people still enjoy. Commercial waterfowl hunting may be prohibited in Western countries, but occasional hunting is still allowed. There are a lot of public hunting grounds for different types of game. When it comes to hunting goose, open fields and bodies of water are the best locations. Geese happen to share the same habitat and behavior as ducks. This is why it is possible to hunt both ducks and geese in some hunting grounds. Getting the right gear In order to have a successful hunting trip, a hunter must have the right equipment. Thus, goose calls are needed. These are typically used together with decoys. A goose call means two different things. It can be the tool used to lure geese or the process of luring them. As a tool, it is a whistle that can mimic the sound of a particular type of goose. It is important to make the sound as accurate as possible in order to get the goose’s attention. If it sounds different to the goose, it will just ignore it. Aside from goose calls, hunters also need to have decoys. In the past, these were usually carved out of wood. However, nowadays, using plastic decoys is more commonly practiced. It is certainly much easier to mass produce decoys made from plastic rather than carve them out of wood one at a time. Before making the goose call, the decoy must be in a good spot. This can be placed on water by using a boat or on land if one is hunting on a field. The location does matter. In addition to goose calls and decoys, hunting blinds are also needed. These blinds are used to hide the hunter from their game. Geese or ducks are not easily fooled otherwise. These creatures will not land in areas where they feel threatened. Making the call Making that goose call should be done after the decoy is in place and a hunter is properly hidden behind hunting blinds. As mentioned above, it is important to know what specific type of geese is in the area in order to make that call. Once the geese lands, the hunter takes a shot with a shotgun, bow or crossbow. Most of the time, hunters prefer to use shotguns because of their range and speed. It is a lot harder to hit a moving bird with a bow or crossbow.
